How Does Activa® DBS Work?

Activa DBS involves the placement of a medical device (much like a cardiac pacemaker) and a thin, insulated wire, called a "lead," completely inside the body. While the device is implanted beneath the skin in the chest, the lead is implanted within the brain. Electrical stimulation is then sent directly to a targeted area of the brain that controls movement on the opposite side of your body. Stimulation of this area enables the brain circuits that control movement to function better. This results in a reduction of tremor in your arms and hands in many patients.
