After the implant procedure, you'll need to have follow-up visits with your clinician. This is because the computer chip inside the neurostimulator has to be programmed to send the electrical pulses to help control your tremor.
Your clinician will use a programmer to non-invasively program (send instructions to) the Activa DBS System. People respond to Activa DBS in their own way and the program for the neurostimulator is customized to meet your individual needs.
The timing of the first session to program your Activa System will depend on:
- Your response to the implant procedure
- Whether your implants were done in a single procedure or in two separate procedures
- Your personal circumstances
You may be asked to stop taking some or all of your medications for 12 to 24 hours before the programming session. This is done to increase the effectiveness of the programming in reducing your tremor.
